The downturn in economy resulted in debt trap for many. Many lost jobs, and many suffered pay cuts.

As a result, people who were able to repay their loans or were able to manage their expenses are no longer able to do so. No one likes to suffer the misery caused by debts. If you want to be debt free, refer to the tips mentioned below.
·    Soul searching: Are you indebted because of some untoward incident or because you have a habit of living beyond your means? If it is the latter case, then, do some soul searching and see where you can cut the corners. If you are an impulsive buyer, get a control on this habit. Do not visit malls unnecessarily.
·    Are you having too many credit cards and you are defaulting on payments? Surrender one or two cards on which you are paying higher rate of interest. Go for debt consolidation, and get transfer the card with higher interest rate to the one with lower charges. However, never ever default on the installment of debt consolidation. Else, you will end up paying a very high rate of interest.
·    Set your priorities: Cut expense on unnecessary things. Buy only necessities. Go to stores that offer goods for a bargain price.
·    Cut your cost: Try to compare your utility bills, if you are paying more, compare the rates and choose a service provider which charges less.
·    If you are using more than one mobile phone, use just one.
·    Are you using more than one car, with one being idle and you are paying loan on both?  Sell off the car with higher loan and repay the loan amount.
·    If you are staying in a house that is beyond your means, change over to a smaller apartment.
·    Take benefit of government debt consolidation program. You need to apply for the same and transfer all the existing loans to one loan.
·    Prepare a monthly budget and stick to it. Make all credit card payments in time. This will ensure that you are debt free.
If you are living a self proclaimed high life style, cut it down. Let the principal of simple living and high thinking be your motto. This way you will be able to enjoy peace of mind and make you debt free.
As a last resort, take advice of a debt consultant. However, remember, that you know your finances better than others and hiring services of debt consultant will only increase your debt.
